School for service sons

ADMISSION to the School is open to boys who are the sons of serving or former Scottish Servicemen or Servicewomen of the Regular Forces - Royal Navy / Royal Marines, Army and RAF. Service in a Scottish Regiment qualifies, even if not of Scottish birth. The sons of officers are eligible only if the father (or mother) has served at least four years in the ranks as a regular. Priority for admissions is given to compassionate cases, thereafter to the sons of Scottish Servicemen who are still serving with substantial service to run. The Service record of the father is a factor that is also considered.
The school still fills a role as boarding centre for boys whose fathers have been killed in action. While the orphans of the two World wars are now long gone from its haven, it now houses youngsters whose fathers died in The Falklands, Northern Ireland, Namibia and accidents or natural death while in service.
Boys may be registered as candidates after their 7th birthday and wilt be considered for admission in the February preceding the start of the September terms that they would wish to enter the School.
The main and recommended age of entry is for Primary 6 (10-11 years), though there are always some places for Primary 7 (11-12 years) and the School has exceptional vacancies for slightly younger compassionate cases or for occasional admission to the Senior School.
The Admissions Board, under the Presidency of one of her Majesty's Commissioners sits at the School each February. Eligible candidates resident in the UK will normally be called, with one parent, for interview by the Board and to sit a standard educational test. Travel warrants are issued.
Overseas candidates are given equal consideration by the Board, the educational test being sent to their schools.

EDUCATION in the Senior School is based on the Scottish system leading to Standard / Ordinary and Higher Grades of the Scottish Certificate of Education and to the Scottish Certificate of Sixth Year Studies in a number of subjects. It is to be noted that a good group of Scottish Higher Grades constitute the educational requirements for entry to Scottish-as well as English Universities, and that the Scottish Sixth Year Studies are a 'post-higher' certificate course. The aim of the School's curriculum policy is to provide for all pupils in a broadly based foundation in English, Arithmetic, Mathematics, French, Classical Studies, General Science, History, Geography, Religious Education, Art and Design, Technical Subjects, Music and Physical Education, a fotfhdation upon which each pupil can build his guided choice of curriculum according to his abilities as he progresses throughout the Senior School.
All boys follow a common course in S1 and S2 (12-13,13-14 years) except that some boys opt to do one or two languages in second year, whilst all pupils continue with the broad framework of subjects. In these years, with the exception of Mathematics, all classes are for broad ability groups. From S3 onward, the choice of subjects is made as wide and varied as possible. The School presents pupils in S4 in 17 Standard / Ordinary Grade subjects. In addition to those listed above, pupils may choose from among the following Certificate subjects; Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Integrated Science, Craft and Design, Technical Drawing, Computer Studies, Economics, Economic History, Modern Studies, Latin and German. As well as class music and Certificate Music, individual instrumental tuition is available from visiting teachers, and boys are encouraged to continue in the Pipe Band and with Highland Dancing.
In S5 and S6 (Post Standard / O Grade years), subject options are wide, and those pupils capable of studying to Higher Grade level may pursue a combination of up to Six Higher Grade subjects, and later, some Sixth Year Studies. Scottish Highers qualify for entrance to every University of Britain.
The School has a very pleasant Library which is well stocked and available for private study.
In the Senior School, boys have games periods on two afternoons within the week, whilst the majority of matches take place on Saturday afternoons. In the winter, Rugby is the principle school game. Cross-country is a strong sport in the winter and spring terms, with Athletics in the summer term.
Additionally boys take part in; Sailing, Canoeing, Shooting, Fencing, Judo, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Squash, Badminton, Golf, Tennis and Swimming.
The School has a Careers Master, and well-documented Careers Office.

Close ties in the house system

The Main Building of the Senior School has up to 190 boys in S1-S6 (12+ - 18 years). The three Senior Houses are organised on a horizontal basis, that is Cunningham and Trenchard Houses, each of 60 boys in their first three years in the Senior School. Haig House is for boys in S4-S6, allowing older boys more freedom, privacy, smaller units of accommodation and facility for private study. Each House is supervised by a resident Housemaster, his Assistant and three Masters and a resident Housematron. Within each House, there is provision of recreational and television rooms, but, generally boys are allowed to personalise their own 'areas' very much as they would their rooms at home.
Although much of a boy's time is spent within the School framework, it is his House and his Housemaster that are his closest ties and are the normal and natural channel of communication between School and parents. Parents are positively encouraged to visit the School to attend and support functions, matches and activities. Parents may take their sons out on certain Saturdays and Sundays in the term by making prior arrangements with the Housemaster early in the previous week. Official school activities, such as matches, are seen as a prior obligation. Older boys in Haig House may be allowed certain weekends away, again by prior arrangement..
