Appeal aim -
£600,000 to
build a new
sports hall

QUEEN VICTORIA SCHOOL Dunblane, a boarding school for the sons of Scottish sailors, soldiers and airmen, has set itself the target of raising £600,000 in 1990 to build a modem sports hall.
The school that was founded in 1906 by public subscription - as a national memorial to Queen Victoria and to Scotsmen killed in the South African War - has excellent facilities already but the indoor accommodation for recreational purposes is below modem needs and the aim is to put that right.
Already since the appeal was launched - with the support of the School's patron, the Duke of Edinburgh earlier this year, over £200.000 has been raised and now the work goes on to complete the task.
Queen Victoria School needs the additional opportunities which the proposed sports hall would provide. And it desperately needs YOUR help to realise the £600,000 goal.
Sport plays a major part in the lives of the boys at Queen Victoria School. The school complex is home to them for seven days a week. 35 weeks of the year and recreational facilities are essential.
At present the only games hall available to the boys is a small building housing two badminton courts crammed so close together that playing on both simultaneously is virtually impossible.
And so, the school is once again looking to public and private donations to help to meet this need.
The Ministry of Defence which has spent £2.5 million in recent years on the school buildings alone, is committed to maintaining the fabric, providing staff and equipping the school educationally, but the improvements which allow Q.V.S. to provide extra-curricular activities have been provided by funds generated by the school itself.
The library, squash courts and swimming pool are all results of such public generosity.
It has long been recognised however that indoor accommodation for recreation has been far below the needs of a modem boarding school.
This is a problem coped with more easily in the summer as the school's setting in the Scottish Highlands makes it ideal for outdoor recreation and sports. In the winter, however, the mountains become hostile, the playing fields unusable and the daylight hours short.
More indoor accommodation is therefore vital and the proposed sports hall could transform the boys' leisure hours giving them more scope for new activities and absorb their leisure time in a useful and rewarding fashion.
The design chosen for the new hall is large enough to house a variety of sports at the one time.
Two games of badminton can be played comfortably side by side while a basketball match goes on unobtrusively nearby.
The hall can be adapted for other sports including indoor football, hockey and volleyball or given over to four badminton courts at any one time.
The sports hall will also include changing and showering facilities, office accommodation and equipment store. An upstairs gallery area provides additional games facilities for pastimes such as table tennis.
One of the great joys for pupils at Queen Victoria School is the unique combination of purposes. tradition and foresight that the school enjoys. Those at the sharp end know that the school has to advance with the times to meet the changing demands of modem day boarding schools.
The Boys at Q.V.S. need their new sports hall and they are looking to you to help them. Please give generously.
