In June 2002 a team of students completed the West Highland Way and Ben Nevis Challenge as well as raising £1100 for the work of the Anthony Nolan Trust. John Campbell (S4), Stephen Carter (S4), Ciara Watson (S4), Darren Howie (S3), Mr Lawrence, Andrew Martin (S3), Sarah Harrower (S3), Tove Olafson (gap student) and Callum Small (S6) took part in this challenge.
Here is Darren Howie's diary of the walk-
Day 1 Having left the school bleary eyed at 6.30am we began with a stop at Tesco in Milngavie where we had a good breakfast to boost our energy for the day ahead! The first few miles were quite easy through woods and country lanes. We stopped for lunch at Dryman - I had my feet checked for damage before playing some football! The section after Balmaha was very hard going as we were all getting tired. To make things worse two members of the group were struggling with injuries and it started to pour down. We eventually arrived at Rowardennan Youth Hostel at 9.30pm having walked nearly 30 miles! The girls cooked some pasta and we settled down to relax and watch the World Cup on the TV.

Day 2 The second day, with a 21 mile stretch, taking us along the banks of Loch Lomond, finished at Crianlarich. The path on this day rose and fell and we had to walk in single file. We stopped for a quick break after 15 miles: it was pouring down and we had to huddle round a small shelter to stay dry. Sadly, the midges had the same idea! Sarah's blister from day 1, although well patched up, was giving her quite a lot of pain. The rain was so heavy that a lot of the path was covered with small rivers but our feet were wet by this point so we didn't really care!! That evening it was the boys turn to cook, and we surprised everybody by making a nice pasta meal!
Day 3 On the third day we had a bit of a lie in as this day was only a 12 mile walk. After breakfast we made up our lunches and set off in good spirits. This first three miles was difficult but we made very good progress, even though it was raining on and off. By the time we reached Tyndrum it started to rain very heavy. We had to huddle together when eating lunch to keep warm! By now most of the group were fed up of Mars Bars - but not me! That night we stayed at the Bridge Of Orchy Hotel in the Bunkhouse and had a meal in the hotel.
