Our next meeting was at Scotstoun Athletics Arena on a cold wet Saturday morning. The opposition included Schools such as Hutchesons Grammar, George Watsons, Douglas Academy and St Aloysius. It's a tough field to compete in; however, many of our athletes attained personal bests and many collected an array of 1st and 2nd places. Ryan Roberson was 1st at shot Putt, David Honeyman cruised the 1500m winning in 4min 58 sec, Glynn Read out threw the opposition in both Shot Putt and Discus, while the S2 relay team came first in an exciting race. Kevin Hayes produced a personal best at Discus, achieving first place, by throwing over 30m. On the girls side Emma Reid ran convincingly to win the 100m, and Melanie Mclnnes, surprised herself by throwing the javelin 15m 66cm and winning the competition. Leanne Bridgman ran confidently and won the |
1500m, and the S2 girls won the relay race. Kate Trousdale, who stepped in at the last moment also managed a first place with a fine throw of 17.80 in the discus. Overall a very successful event. At the Forth Valley Championships held at Grangemouth the weather was dismal; however, the athletes persevered and were rewarded by winning the following team categories.
51 Girls Team 1st 52 Boys Team 1st 53 Boys Team 1st
Scottish Schools were not as successful for us this year as last. Our representing athletes were as follows:
Fiona Coyle, Triple jump Katrina Leith, 200m Alistair Page, High Jump Jamie Evenden, Discus Gynn Read, Discus Tom Bruce, Triple Jump Robert Carmichael, Triple Jump Scott Lawrie, 400m Stephen Cate, 100mr Greg Towns, 200m
Although all athletes attained personal bests we managed only to attain 2 bronze medals, one by Tom Bruce, jumping 11.34, the other by Alistair Page jumping 1.65 (ranked 5th in Scotland). Alistair is now in the national squad training system and has already, this season, cleared 1m 70cm. It is also worth noting that Katrina Leith was ranked 6th in Scotland last year for the 100m with a time of 12.85 and 13th in Scotland for the 200m with a time of 26.66.
Congratulations to all competitors who represented the school at all levels and thanks to Mr Laing and Miss Scott for their time, effort and enthusiasm throughout the season, despite the weather!
