QUEEN VICTORIA SCHOOL PIPES AND DRUMS
The School Pipe Band has had its difficulties during the past year, chiefly owing to having been without a Drum Major Instructor for the Drummers for much of the time. However, owing to the great efforts of the Pipe Major, Mr. Mackenzie, well supported by the boy Pipe Major, Sammy Dalziel, and the Senior Drummer, lan Grant, and the Band as a whole, the efficiency of the Band has been well maintained and all engagements fully met to the satisfaction of everyone concerned. We hope to have a permanent Drum Major again by the beginning of the Christmas Term and in the meantime Corporal Smith, from the Scottish Division Band Company, has been loaned to us to help out in instruction twice a week, a service greatly appreciated. Three Internationals at Murrayfield were played at,

against Argentina in November, England in February, France in March. In May of this year the Band competed in the Scottish Pipe Band Association Competitions in North Berwick and won a cup for being first in "Marching and Discipline" out of fifty-three Pipe Bands, all the others being adull Bands. They also came 4th for playing in their class, with only a point between them and the 2nd and 3rd Bands. Retreat was carried out at Edinburgh Castle on 1 June to which our Senior Commissioner, General Sir Philip Christison, Bart, came all the way from Melrose to honour us by "Taking the Salute." The Band also played in early June at Callander and at the Junior Leaders Battalion Open Day at Cultybraggan. The School Highland Dancing Display Team also took part in the latter two engagements. In early September the Pipe Band and Highland Dancing Team have an important engagement to play for the British Association Convention at Stirling Castle..
