CANOEING

Seventy-two boys have undergone training in the School baths of whom forty-two have completed their initial training. Of these, twenty-four have spent at least one afternoon on the River Teith, and nine have been on canoeing/camping expeditions on the River Forth. Training is being limited at present to

Secondary Department boys in the Second Form and above, but it is hoped to introduce the first year boys to the sport during the Summer Term.
Five boys underwent speed training on Loch Venachar and, of these, four competed in the Scottish Canoe Association 1973 National Open Youth Sprint Championships on the Loch. Alex Carmichael was our most successful competitor gaining 4th place in the Final of the Under 16 years 250 metres event for Slalom Kayaks.
Enthusiasm for the sport is very keen, but we are being severely handicapped by lack of time, availability of adult instruction and supervision, and training facilities and equipment. Our fleet of eight canoes, most of them now in poor condition, are baing maintained by the Senior Boys and we are grateful, particularly to Timothy Manson and Ross Nesbitt, for the many hours and sterling work which they have given to the club in maintaining the canoes
