SCHOOL NOTES AND NEWS
A notable event this term was the visit of the bands of the Black Watch (Bandmaster Holmes, Pipe- Major Anderson, and Drum-Major Cuthbert) to beat the retreat on the School field. This excellent performance drew a number of visitors from outside. The technique of the experts was keenly watched by members of the School pipe band.
There have been two distinguished visiting preachers at chapel services this term. The first was the Reverend G. M. R. Bennett, B.D., Assistant Chaplain General. In his address he referred to an Old Victorian who had been with him in a Japanese prison-camp, one of the finest men he had ever met. This was the late Major J. R. Pirie, Royal Scots. His courage and strength of character were an inspiration to his comrades, and an example to the Victorians of later generations. The other visiting preacher was the Very Reverend A. C. Craig, M.C., D.D., former Moderator of the Church of Scotland. In a sermon that held the boys' attention all the way, he gave his own modern parable of the talents, comparing a man's natural gifts to the cards that are dealt to each person in a game of whist.
We also had two visiting parties this term. A party of Commonwealth teachers, as last summer, was brought here from the Dundee College of Education to see Q.V.S. at work. Then there was a party of Swedish students of both sexes, who were also shown round the School to see its activities. They went into the Play Hall where the cast of "Alt's Button " were busy rehearsing ; and gave the actors a polite round of applause before they left.
Four more boys have been sent on Outward Bound courses this year. L. Heron and K. Boyne attended the junior course in the Easter term, and at the time of writing, E. Gillespie and A. Kay are away on the senior course.
As mentioned in the report of pipe band activities, the School was honoured this year by an invitation to the band to beat the retreat on the esplanade at Edinburgh Castle on the Queen's birthday. Captain E. R. Sansom led the party. Another honour was the invitation from the Commanding Officer, 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards, for a party from the School to attend the ceremony at Holyroodhouse, of the presentation of colours to the battalion by Her Majesty the Queen. The Q.V.S. party consisted of Captain Frost, Drum-Major Morrison (late Scots Guards), and the Scots Guards sons in the School, 14 in number.
The annual Relay Baton sports meeting had to be cancelled this year because of very bad weather conditions. This now takes the form of an athletic competition between teams from various schools, held annually on our School field. Q.V.S. generally tails behind in the competition, because we simply
